CLARKS LANE ANCIENT WOODLANDS AND HOPS
The Ancient Woodlands behind the Titsey Brewery have been getting their annual haircut this past week. Ample rain and sunshine during the summer created a lush undergrowth which, unless cut back, will restrict the amazing carpet of bluebells and other wild flowers next spring. New signs have also been installed with some descriptions of the woodlands and the hops that have been planted around the newly created seating area. Patrons of the Titsey Brewery are welcome to enjoy a stroll in the woodlands, which might be particularly beneficial after a good lunch in the Taproom. Walkers and dog owners are advised, however, not to stray onto the private golf course next door.
The hops are a new innovation for the Titsey Brewery. The soil at the top of the North Downs is not suitable for growing hops commercially but, in order to create an atmospheric seating area, two semi-circles of a dwarf or garden variety of hops called Golden Tassels have been planted. Although it is only their first year it is pleasing to see that a majority of the bines have emerged and many of them are producing a small crop of hops. These will be harvested and added to the beer at the Brewery over the next couple of months.
