The Story behind our Seasonal: Vanguard
The Vanguard Way is one of the major long-distance walks that pass through the Titsey Estate, along with the Norths Downs Way and the Greensand Way, but is the only one going from North to South. It travels some 107 km from East Croydon Station to Newhaven on the South Coast through some of the most spectacular countryside of Surrey and Sussex. 7.5km of this journey is through the Titsey Estate. The route traverses close to both the Botley Hill Farmhouse, where the Titsey Brewery was founded and the Carpenters Arms in Limpsfield Chart that has Titsey Beers regularly on tap. It also goes through Titsey Park itself and past the Moorhouse Sandpits.
The history of the Vanguard Way is that it was formally established on 3rd May 1981 by the Vanguards Rambling Club, who had named themselves after an occasion when they had returned from a walk travelling in the guard’s van of an overcrowded train. From 2022 the responsibility of the route’s management has been taken over by the Vanguard Way Association. Nearly the entire route is on public rights of way and traverses largely through open countryside and woodland.
There is an excellent website The Vanguard Way (www.vanguardway.org.uk ) which provides details of the route which covers a designated National Park (South Downs), 2 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Surrey Hills and High Weald), and a Heritage Coast (Sussex Coast).
VANGUARD TASING NOTES:
Vanguard Classic Session Ale melds Bramling Cross and Golding hops, yielding a deep amber ale. The subtle bitter and sweet notes achieve an all-occasion, full flavour lower ABV beer.
